If you’ve been wondering what your beauty products are made of, you’re not alone. Many consumers of beauty products are starting to be more aware of the products they are putting on their faces and bodies. For those products that aren’t labeled, you never know what you’re rubbing onto your face. Thankfully, there are some beauty recipes that are 100% compostable, natural, safe and completely effective. Try adding one of these compostable recipes to your beauty routine to limit waste and protect your skin and health.

Compostable body scrub

This is an amazing recipe for total body exfoliation. You’ll need:

  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup organic extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/8 cup raw honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon scent options, such as pure vanilla extra, lavender essential oil, lemon juice or cinnamon (optional)

Mix all ingredients in a bowl to form a paste. Store in a sealed container in your bathroom. To use, rub and massage onto skin in the shower as needed.

Honey & lemon facial cleanser

To make your own complexion-boosting honey and lemon facial cleanser, mix two teaspoons of honey and one teaspoon of fresh lemon juice. Warm between your fingers, smooth on the face and allow to dry. Then rinse off with warm water.

Apple cider vinegar facial cleanser

Make your own natural toner that helps soothe any breakouts. Mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts water. Shake well and apply to the face with a cotton pad or ball. When your skin dries, use your normal facial moisturizer.

Citrus salt scrub

Need a refreshing way to start off your day? Try this refreshing scrub. You’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup sea salt
  • 1/2 cup oil olive, almond or whatever you prefer
  • 1 teaspoon citrus zest (orange, lime, lemon or your choice)

Mix ingredients together and rub on your skin while in the shower. Rinse well.

Avocado Mask

If you struggle with dry skin, try this hydrating mask. Mash ½ avocado with two tablespoons of honey. Apply to your face, let sit twenty minutes and rinse off well.

Cucumber Mask

This mask is perfect for inflamed or oily skin. Blend ½ cucumber with one teaspoon bentonite clay and one tablespoon of honey. Add additional clay as necessary to create a paste. Apply to the face and allow to sit for twenty minutes. Remove with a washcloth and warm water.

Compostable blush

If you want to experiment with making your own cosmetics, then this is a great recipe to try. You’ll need:

  • 1/2 teaspoon arrowroot powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon organic cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon hibiscus powder

Mix ingredients together until desired shade is reached. You may prefer a lighter or darker shade. Store in an airtight container.

While cosmetics can be a major source of toxins for many people, you can avoid a good majority of them by making your own skincare products. Try one or more of these compostable recipes and you may find that they are more effective than the ones you buy in the store.
