Dark red lipstick goes with fall like cozy sweaters, boots, and pumpkin spice everything. There are some great new dark red lipsticks on the market this fall, as well as some all-time favorites, in a variety of finishes and textures, from matte to metallic. Cheers to a beautiful new season of bold, sexy lips.

Make It Matte

Matte finishes are perfect for the season. Shiseido’s Modern Matte Powder Lipstick in 522Velvet Rope is a gorgeous, deep red. This matte did not dry out our lips at all and has major staying power. Another favorite matte is the NYX Suede Matte Lipstick in Spicy. Slightly brighter than the Shiseido lipstick, this one has a soft, velvety finish and lasts all day. The Morphe Mega Matte Lipstick comes in a variety of reds, though we like the shade of Morphe. This is a full coverage, full-color lipstick. Looking for a liquid lipstick? Then the Anastasia Beverly Hills version in Sarafine, a dark, blue-red, that goes with every skin tone and dries quickly to give that perfect pout.

Satin Dreams

While mattes are still enjoying major popularity, there is something to be said for a satin finish. Not gloss, not shimmer, but that classic, slightly luminous look. The Givenchy Le Rouge Lipstick in 307Grenat Initié, is a great red option. Givenchy makes beautiful, non-drying lipsticks, and even their satins do not budge. Another one to try is the Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in So Marilyn. It’s a bit brighter, but is still a full, intense red that is perfect for fall. The popular NARS Audacious Lipstick in Charlotte, a deep red, also offers a satin finish. This hydrating formula is full coverage and long-lasting.

Go Bold

However, if you are looking for something even more amped up, whether it be a gloss, shimmer, frost, or metallic, there are also some great options this fall. The Buxom Va-Va-PLUMP Shiny Liquid Lipstick in Boldly Go is an attention-drawing gloss for those who love a bold lip. The Dior Rouge Dior Lipstick comes in 856Celebre, a dark, shimmery red. The Urban Decay Vice Lipstick Metallized in Cruel is a red with a copper shimmer, which works well for a holiday look. Or you could try the best of both worlds, matte and metallic, with the Too Faced Melted Matte-Tallic Liquified Metallic Matte Lipstick (though don’t try pronouncing it too quickly) in I Wanna Rock With You. Too Faced Melted lipsticks are a long-wear favorite, and this glam burgundy color is fantastic on everyone.

Application Precision

Darks reds can be a bit challenging to apply, so it is always a good idea to exfoliate and moisturize your lips first. Then use a lip primer, lip liner (in either a nude or a matching dark red shade), and apply with a lip brush, for a super smooth, super precise application and maximum staying power. Clean up any color outside the lines with a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover.
