While darker skin tones can beautifully handle a variety of shades for lips and cheeks, when it comes to foundations, it might not be as easy to specify your tone. Finding that perfect combination of foundation and/or bronzer can be a time consuming process.
A step in the right direction is to work with your undertones. If you have more of a cool complexion, it means you have pink, red, or blue undertones. Should you have warm complexion, you would have more yellow and green undertones. A neutral complexion is a nice combination of the undertones.
Here’s a fun little beauty tip, if you look at your veins in your wrist, and they’re green, that would insinuate that you have warm undertones. If they’re blue, you have cooler undertones. Obviously that would mean that if your veins are blue-green, you’re more of a neutral!
When you’re shopping for foundation, you want to make sure that you match the tone to the rest of your body, rather than just your face. Should you be at a store trying different samples, be sure to pick a couple of shades either way on the temperature scale in order to match more specifically.
Here are some of the top foundations for darker tones:
Rihanna’s brand new “Fenty Beauty” line
Rihanna completely changed the beauty game by releasing a line including more than 40 shades of foundation. She recognized that mainstream beauty was lacking in diversity, and completely slayed it with this line!
Nars All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation

Formulated with green and gold pigments which reflect off of your skin in order to reduce redness.
Black Up Matifying Fluid Foundation

Coming from a company for women who have darker skin tones, this foundation provides a natural finish with medium coverage.
As for eyeshadows…
Jewel tones will absolutely pop on darker tones. Purples, bright blues, and greens will be stunning alongside golds and bronzes. Steer clear of whites or frosty finishes, you want to aim more for a soft shimmer, or a softer matte.
What about blush?
Deeper mauve tones, brighter oranges, or even a cranberry would create that extra glow!
Now, with all of this being said, what you pick to beautify yourself with is completely up to your comfort zone. There might be some shades that could seem a big outrageous or a step outside of what you usually use. This could be your chance to try something new and spice up your beauty routine! The beauty world is currently creating different palettes for all skin tones, and expanding the items that will work perfectly for darker tones (MAJOR shoutout to Rihanna!), so now is your chance to find that perfect combination designed specifically for you.
