I have combination skin, which means my skin care routine changes as often as the seasons do. Now that it’s colder, I have to be extra careful about keeping my face moisturized, but not too moisturized, and avoiding products that do more harm than good to my pores. Over the years, I’ve found that the best skin care routine for oily skin is one that involves exfoliators and facial cleansers.
Here’s a breakdown of the best skin care routine for oily skin. If you are consistent, your skin won’t have to work as hard as it does to produce oil in the first place.
1. Facial cleansers are a crucial step in your routine.
Cleansing your face daily is important because it gives your skin a chance to start the day with a clean slate. Think about all of the toxins and air pollution that stick to your face after a long day outside. Now, imagine going to bed with a face full of that bacteria and repeating the same action over and over again. Gross, right?
I cleanse my face in the morning and at night. There’s something super relaxing about going through a nighttime skin care routine right before bed. If you’re prone to acne breakouts, you should aim for a facial cleanser that either has salicylic acid, glycolic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
2. Moisturize daily!
One of the biggest mistakes that people with oily skin make is skipping out on moisturizing their skin. Your skin is oily enough, so moisturizing would be counterproductive, right? This couldn’t be further from the truth! This will actually force your skin to work double time to produce even oil more to make up for the moisture it’s missing.
I recently started using OLEHENRIKSEN’s Counter Balance Oil Control Hydrator to even out my skin’s oil production. It also goes on smoothly under primer and foundation, which is a bonus.
3. Keep your skin looking healthy, smooth and rejuvenated with an exfoliator.
This is more of a weekly practice. Use a gentle exfoliator to make your skin look and feel smooth. But it’s important that you don’t overdo it. Exfoliating your face too much will leave your skin feeling red and irritated. You can use a facial scrub that has green tea extracts or essential oils in it or go the natural route and make a brown sugar and honey scrub.
4. Retinol will make you look younger.
Retinol will help take years off of your face by removing wrinkle lines and making your skin firmer. It also evens out your skin tone and combats acne flare-ups. Be on the lookout for exfoliators with this ingredient so you can shave time off of your morning routine when you’re rushing to work.
5. Sunscreen (YES, you should still be using it!)
Before you step out that door, make sure you apply sunscreen. A common misconception is that you only need sunscreen during the summer or when it’s really bright outside. The truth is that you need to protect your skin from those harmful UV rays at all times. You’ll notice a huge difference in your skin’s texture if you do!
