It’s official. Activated charcoal has been hailed as the ultimate beauty elixir. But it wasn’t until recently that the beauty obsessed started swiping all skin care products with this magical ingredient off of the shelves. If you’re like me and love trying the latest beauty products in Sephora, chances are it’s in your soap, face mask or toothpaste.

Although it’s the beauty product of the moment, activated charcoal has been around for a very long time and comes in many different forms. This makes it usefulness stretch far and wide. It exfoliates your skin, fights acne, and helps keep your underarms feeling refreshed. The list goes on.

Even though activated charcoal is one of the most popular beauty ingredients, does it actually work? How effective is it when you’re trying to get healthy skin, hair and teeth? We put over 10 popular products to the test to see if they were really worth the hype, and narrowed it down to the top five.

1. Boom! Toothy Tabs

These little charcoal tablets promise to leave you with a killer Hollywood smile. To use them, you have to crush them with your teeth (or in a small jar) and then brush. The after taste isn’t as bad as we expected! The activated charcoal is mixed with black pepper oil and gunpowder tea. To get actual results, you have to use these consistently.

2. Blaq Mask

By now, Blaq Mask’s charcoal face mask has blessed your Snapchat feed. This face mask gets rid of blackheads and leaves your skin feeling smooth. Although it compliments all skin types, it’s perfect for those with acne-prone skin. The carbon properties found in the charcoal help regulate the amount of oil your face produces. When you are applying the mask, you only need a small amount for your T-zone. Gently peel away the mask once it’s dried up and hardens.

3. Boscia’s Konjac Cleansing Sponge with Bamboo Charcoal

This facial exfoliator evens out your skin tone and stops your skin from looking dull and lackluster. Its natural blend of bamboo charcoal, konjac root, jojoba leaves and willowherb work together to rid your skin of any impurities or everyday toxins. I have combination skin, which makes it hard to find beauty products that target my oily noise, forehead and dry face.

4. Yes to Tomatoes Clear Skin Activated Charcoal Bar Soap

If we had to order this list in terms of effectiveness, this bar soap would be number one every single time. This charcoal bar soap is the ultimate beauty cleanser. It targets different problem areas on your face and body. This is also helpful for those of you who get multiple breakouts in other places besides your face. It absorbs any dirt or charcoal.

5. Boscia Charcoal Makeup Melter Cleansing Oil-Balm

This charcoal makeup remover works very quickly. It’s mixed with bamboo charcoal and Japanese Binchotan powder. It comes in the form of an oil-balm and digs deep to remove any makeup that refuses to budge – even waterproof eyeliner!
