What’s better than a nice warm bath after a long stressful day? Especially in the colder months, it can be just the thing you need to warm up and relax. You may enjoy yours surrounded by scented candles, with bubbles, or with your favorite playlist in the background, but one of the popular new trends is the use of bath bombs to enhance the experience.
While it may sound like something that is destructive, don’t let the name fool you. These are bombs of pure goodness. A bath bomb is a hard-packed combination of dry ingredients which disperse when they hit the water. You can pack in your favorite essential oils, colors, or bubbles and all will fill the bath once the bath bomb hits the water.
When you drop a bath bomb in the tub, it will begin to fizz and typically takes about five minutes to fully dissolve into the water. The ingredients used to make the fizzing effect are baking soda and citric acid which react in the presence of water.
Here’s a generic recipe you can use to make your own bath bomb creation:
DIY bath bomb recipe:
4 ounces of baking soda
2 ounces of corn starch
2 ounces of citric acid
2 ounces of Epsom salt
1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons of water
1 teaspoon of essential oil of your choice
1 1/4 teaspoon of coconut oil
Small glass jar
Bath bomb mold
Combine your dry ingredients in the bowl. The first four ingredients are the dry ingredients, in case you have any question.
Whisk the dry ingredients they are a nice, smooth powder with no clumps.
In your jar, combine the wet ingredients. The water and two types of oil, just in case you are having trouble.
Slowly pour the second mixture into the first. Whisk as you go. If the mixture starts to foam, slow down. Slow and steady will win this race.
Fill your bath bomb mold until it is just a bit too full. If you do not have one, they are not hard to come by.
Close the halves of the mold together and let sit for about 10 minutes.
Remove the bombs gently. They will break apart if you are not careful with them. They are not meant to be manhandled!
Allow them to dry out in the open air over night.
Wrap up and give away, or put in your bathroom for future use!
Plunk, pop, fizz, ahhhhh! You will be in aromatic heaven in no time. These bath bombs are fun to make as you can customize them to your own preferences. Furthermore, if you get good at it, you can make extra for your friends and family.
