DIY Tricks To Minimize Brown Spots & Freckles

Brown spots can be a pain. They get in the way of a smooth, flawless look and don’t always cover well with makeup. Most brown spots are harmless, but some could actually be moles, which could turn cancerous. Have a doctor look at them to make sure they are harmless. If they are, you have a number of options for fading them yourself. Whether it’s commercial products or natural remedies, there are tons of methods to try.

Lemon Juice

This popular DIY beauty ingredient has bleaching properties that can help lighten those dark spots. Leave-on times vary, but for the most intensive results, dab fresh lemon juice on the area, leave for 30 minutes and then rinse off. Do this twice per day for two months.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has always been known as a very soothing skin treatment. Do the same as instructed with the lemon juice, but use natural aloe vera gel. You can also sub out aloe vera juice if you can’t find gel.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a strong option that will take less time. Combine apple cider vinegar with water so that it’s one-part vinegar to one-part water. Let this mixture sit for a few minutes on the affect area, then wash off. You can use this remedy once per day until you notice your desired level of fading.

Another option is to find a product that has chemical exfoliators like salicylic or glycolic acid, which help your skin get rid of any dead skin cells and promote faster cell turnover. As the skin is promoted to replace cells, the dark spots in your complexion should even out faster. Use twice daily.

Brightening Serum

Another option is commercial brightening serums, which work well when used in conjunction with an exfoliator. Many of these combine ingredients that reduce dark marks, like retinol and antioxidants.

Chamomile is another DIY skin health favorite and has been used forever as a natural skin lightener. Brew a strong tea and let it cool to room temperature. Dab it onto the dark spots, leave for 15 minutes and then rinse the tea off. Repeat until you see the desired effect.

You can also add a tablespoon of honey to one cup of strongly brewed chamomile tea, and leave it on your face for 10 to 15 minutes. That will create a lightening effect over the whole area.

Grape Seed Extract

According to a scientific review, “Extensive research suggests that grape seed extract is beneficial in many areas of health because of its antioxidant effect to bond with collagen, promoting youthful skin, cell health, elasticity and flexibility.”

This powerful natural element is also reputed to be a strong skin lightener. You can apply a few drops topically to the affected area once or twice per day until you see the desired effect (it may take a few months). It should absorb into the skin. There are also commercial lightening serums that contain grape seed oil.
