How To Get Hair Dye Out Of Fabric

While it’s true that you can save time and money doing your hair coloring job at home, it can also present a few potential problems. One of these is accidently getting hair dye on fabrics in your home. Instead of giving up and tossing them out, discover a few simple methods to get hair dye out of fabric or clothing.

Speed Is Of The Essence

Hair dye is a chemical that is meant to stain your hair after sitting on it. The same goes for the product when it hits your fabrics. The faster you can get the hair dye off and the item washed, the more likely you are to save your material. Here are a few methods you can try to get hair dye out of fabric.

  • Bleach, Soak & Wash: If you have stained something that can be bleached, mix cool water and bleach together in a tub and allow the item to soak for a half an hour. Then, rinse and wash.
  • Ammonia, Soak & Wash: When you have something that cannot be bleached, use a tub and mix ammonia with water. Lay out the piece and pull it tight in a place that will allow you to dump your ammonia mixture through the fabric. Rinse it thoroughly and then wash.
  • Rubbing Alcohol: Use rubbing alcohol to blot the stain out by putting the solution on a clean and white cloth. Continue blotting the fabric until the stain disappears and then wash normally.
  • Dishwashing Detergent: Mix dishwashing liquid with warm water and use the same process that you completed with the rubbing alcohol.
  • White Vinegar: Combine two cups of water and a cup of vinegar and use this solution by putting it on a cloth and pressing and holding it onto the stain for fifteen seconds at a time. Keep doing this moving to a clean piece of your cloth each time it becomes saturated with the hair dye.
  • Commercial Color Remover: There are commercial color remover products on the market that are made for this sole purpose. Follow the manufacturer’s directions.
  • Dishwashing Detergent & Ammonia For Red Hair Dye Stains: Red dye can be more difficult than other colors. Here is a solution to try if you are having a hard time getting a stain out. Create a mixture using one quart of water, one tablespoon of ammonia, and 1.2 teaspoons of dish liquid soap. Soak the stain for fifteen minutes. Remove and rub the dye until it loosens up and soak for another fifteen minutes. Rinse well. In another bowl mix one tablespoon distilled vinegar and a quart of warm water. Soak the stain for thirty minutes and then wash.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide For Colored T-Shirts: Colored shirts are going to limit you because you cannot put bleach on them. Hydrogen peroxide can sit directly on the stain for five minutes. Then, wash the item in the hottest water. You might have to do it a few times just don’t dry in between washes because that will make the stain harder to get out.

Sometimes, getting hair dye on your clothes, linens and other fabrics happens. Instead of just throwing them out, use these tactics to quickly and easily get hair dye out of fabric to return your items back to brand new.
