Stress can affect every part of our body, even our skin. When our bodies are stressed, the hormone cortisol is released. Unfortunately while cortisol is helpful in fight or flight situations, it can be taxing on our body in many ways, one of which is having a negative impact on our skin.

Wrinkles are the biggest effect of cortisol on your skin. Cortisol can lead to increased sugar levels in the blood which can damage collagen. When it’s damaged, it hardens which increases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Stress can also cause dry skin because it damages the skin’s protective qualities that allow it to hold in moisture. Other consequences of stress are fine lines, puffiness and acne.

Steps To Minimize Stress

If you are stressed, don’t worry. There are things you can to do minimize stress and its affects on your skin. Here are some helpful tips to help you minimize stress for beautiful skin.

  1. Drink tea: Research has shown that those who consume tea after doing a stressful task experience a bigger drop in cortisol than those who did not.
  2. Listen to music: You probably know that certain music helps you relax. It’s proven to be true, too. Those who listened to music while going through a stressful procedure experienced less stress than those who did not listen to music.
  3. Meditate: Meditating has long been known to reduce stress. And it doesn’t just have to be meditation. Any activity where you are present and engage in your senses can be meditative.
  4. Eat superfoods: Superfoods can cause your cortisol levels to plummet. Try to eat foods such as berries, broccoli, asparagus and spinach.
  5. Check your ego: Those with bigger egos tend to be stressed more often. If you have a big ego, try toning it down a bit. How do you know? Do you get angry when others correct you? Do you think you are more important than others? Do you want to be the center of attention most of the time? These are all signs that a perspective shift may be needed.
  6. Express your needs: Failing to express needs can build up stress. Start by facing your fears and making your feelings known.
  7. Book a massage: Researchers have found that weekly massages enhanced immunity and reduced cortisol levels. If you can’t afford to get massages from a professional, try an at-home self-massage.
  8. Exercise: Exercise, especially when it is outdoors, has been shown to lower cortisol levels. Try a new hike or even practice yoga outdoors.
  9. Sleep at least 8 hours: A shortage of sleep can have serious consequences on your body. Those who sleep for six hours or less often have 50% higher amounts of cortisol than others who get a full eight hours.
  10. Journal: Being able to write down and fully express your feelings on paper can help you feel more relaxed. It’s a healthy way to release frustrations.
  11. Consult a psychodermatologist: If you feel you need help with a serious skin issue, consulting a psychodermatologist is always an option. They can help you determine if a skin disorder has exacerbated by psychological stress.
