Most of us think that falling asleep with wet hair wrapped in a towel is safe. Although many scientists have speculated that sleeping with wet hair can cause colds or pneumonia, we really want to know, is it bad to sleep with wet hair? The answer is yes because it can have other adverse consequences on your health. Wet hair is the optimum condition to allow bacteria, germs, and fungi to multiply and proliferate easily. Sleeping with wet hair can be an open door to headaches, colds, or even to pneumonia.
Why is it bad to sleep with wet hair?
1. Headaches
Sleeping with wet hair can give you severe headaches. This occurs because during sleep, your general body temperature increases. As the body heats up, the moisture on the towel around your head can give you headaches because there are a lot of temperature differences.
2. Hair breaking
Wet hair tends to break very easily. If you sleep with wet hair, a lot of hair breakage is likely to take place. So it would never be a good idea to sleep with dripping wet hair.
3. Expect Tangled hair
If you decide to sleep with wet hair, you could end up with a lot of tangled hair the next morning because they will tend to get tangled and bind themselves. Those with longer hair should always avoid sleeping with wet hair. Otherwise, you will have problems unraveling the tangles which will cause additional breakage.
4. Itching
It is bad to sleep with wet hair because it can cause different types of itching. This is due to the moisture that causes irritation on the scalp.
5. Infections
Pillows are an ideal place for bacteria because they absorb sweat, dead skin cells, and body oils. The wet hair moistens the towel and it moves the moisture to the pillow which then becomes the nest for the development of bacteria.
6. Dandruff
The wet scalp may interfere with the function of the sebaceous glands present on the scalp. They can either start producing more oil or experience a reduction in oil-production level. This could disrupt the natural pH balance of the scalp. As a result, you will either suffer from excessive dandruff or oily scalp.
So, is it bad to sleep with wet hair? If you want to avoid all these types of annoyances and setbacks, you should avoid going to bed with your hair wet. This is why it is recommended to use a towel after taking your bath, and also, keep your pillow and your sleeping space dry always. So, whenever you plan to wash your hair, always do it during the daytime hours. This would be good for your overall health. Now you know the answer to the question “is it bad to sleep with wet hair?”
