I’ve always wanted to be the type of girl who works out constantly and looks super ~fit~ and cute. But we all know how hard that is, especially as a student who works part time and has a social life. That’s where yoga comes in.

DISCLAIMER: I am in no way shape or form a “yogi” or a cool professional yoga girl. I’m just sharing my thoughts and experiences with the practice.

I’ve done yoga here and there in the past, but recently I’ve gotten into the habit of doing it most days of the week. Here are some of the reasons yoga is super important, and something I’ll probably always do (and you should too).

It gives me a routine

As a student, I already have a pretty strict routine, but this adds something healthy into the mix. Depending on the day (and how I’m feeling), I’ll start my day with a short yoga routine, or end the day with a more relaxing one. I’m not super strict with myself about this though. If I’m feeling sick or just don’t have time, I won’t do any, and that’s okay. However, I do look forward to the practice, so most days it happens. It just makes me feel good.

It gets me moving

Like I said before, I’m not a cool fitness girl like I wish I was. But, I do want to get moving during my day. Yoga isn’t the most strenuous workout in the world, but if you do it right, it’s actually super challenging. Not only does it help with your flexibility through different stretches, it improves your body’s strength and balance. Each move is intentional and works a specific part of your body. For me, it’s the perfect way to get my body moving and stretched out without committing to an hour long workout that makes me sore for the 3 days following (but I still do that sometimes, oops).

It relaxes me

Yoga is calming. A huge part of practicing yoga involves focusing on your breath and being mindful of how your body is moving and resting. The mindfulness aspect is what especially helps me. After a long day of studying and working, it’s so nice to unwind with some challenging yoga to prepare me for bed and the next day to come. I always feel amazing when I finish a workout.

It can be quick if you need it to be

No time, no problem. I usually just find my yoga sequences on YouTube (find one of my favorite channels here), and there are differing lengths for whatever time you’re working with. From 5 minutes to over an hour, there really is no excuse not to get some yoga in.

It’s more than just a workout

Like I said before, one of the most important components to yoga is mindfulness. Aside from working and stretching your body, your mind is involved in the process too. Letting go of stress and anxiety, forgiving yourself and calming your mind are all things that can be worked on during your workout. I feel as if I’m doing something for my mind and body at the same time, which is amazing.
