You’ve been using the lip liner trick to fake fuller lips, but now you’re wondering if there’s a better, longer-lasting option. Over the past few years, lip injections have gotten crazy popular on the red carpet (and on your social media feeds). Stars like Kylie Jenner have essentially built their brand around their plump lips. Let’s be real, who doesn’t want a sexy, kissable pout like the lipstick queen herself?
But are lip fillers really worth it? Before you book your next appointment, here are six things you should know about lip injections.
1. Maintenance can get expensive.
Depending on where you live in and your doctor, lip fillers can cost anywhere between $500 to $2000 per injection. They also last for about six months, which means that you would have to get another injection if you would like to keep the look. This can also be seen as a positive thing if you end up changing your mind down the line.
2. Despite popular belief, there are a few risks involved.
Although this is a simple procedure, there are some risks that you should be aware of. Remember that your lips contain blood vessels which, if hit, can result in tissue loss. Your lips can also reject the formula and become infected. Many of these risks can be avoided by finding the right doctor and doing extensive research before making your decision.
3. Speaking of doctors…
When you research where to have the procedure done, make sure you also look up the dermatologists or plastic surgeons in charge. Going to an expert increases your chances of loving the outcome and will make it more likely that the shape or size of the filler will match your facial structure.
4. You don’t have to commit to it if you don’t like how it looks.
Many doctors use hyaluronic acid fillers such as restylane and juvederm because they’re more natural and compliment your body’s chemistry. The best part about HA fillers is that they are temporary and can be easily reversed. If you get a filler but end up hating the way it looks, your doctor can use enzymes to get rid of it. Bonus: It only takes about five minutes to dissolve.
5. The procedure is pretty quick and isn’t painful.
If you have a very low tolerance for pain, you’ll be happy to know that getting lip fillers won’t hurt. At most, you will feel a pinch or stinging sensation which disappears pretty quickly. You can even ask your doctor to numb your lips beforehand. Also, getting your lip injected takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes, which means you’ll be in and out of the doctor’s office. However, give yourself time to heal in case of bruising or bleeding afterwords.
6. Taking any painkillers before the procedure is a HUGE no.
Because there’s a chance that they may make your blood thinner, you can’t have certain painkillers in your system roughly ten days before your injection. You should also avoid vitamin E as it also acts as a blood thinner. Check with your doctor beforehand to see if tylenol is okay to use.
There’s no harm or shame in getting lip fillers so you can feel more confident. But, be sure to do a lot of research beforehand so you can figure out if it’s the best option for you.
