How to Apply Lip Liner – Step by Step

1. Start with the Prep

It is very normal to have chapped or dry, flaky skin from time to time. For the best results, you want to ensure your lips are smooth and prepped so you should keep your lips hydrated.

Exfoliating your lips is the key to hydration. When you exfoliate, dead skin cells come off leaving the lips supple and refreshed. You can exfoliate using a hydrating lip balm or apply a dry sheet mask over your lips. Once your lips are moisturized and smooth, lip liner application will be made easier.

2. Understand Your Lip Shape

It is needless to say that we all have different lip shapes, and the best thing for anyone to do is identify their lip peculiarities. So, before applying a lip liner, you should consider your natural lip shape. You can do this by looking into the mirror and checking whether you have fuller lower lips and want to amplify the upper lip or you want both to be full.

Understanding your lip shape will help you identify what you need to do and how to achieve the perfect pout.

3. Select Your Lip Liner Shade

The next thing to do is choose your lip liner shade based on the color of lipstick you are using. You can watch videos online to learn how to shade-match your lipstick and liner, but here is one of our favorite, combinations – HAUS LABORATORIES By Lady Gaga: LIP SYNC SET

4. Draw the Upper Lip

Draw out the desired line you want on your upper lip. For the best result, you can use the liner to draw on the back of your palm and warm it up. Begin the drawing from the top corner of the lip and follow your natural lip line as you go.

This will give the lips an illusion of being fuller and wider and will also help define the focus areas.

5. Draw the Bottom Lip

The next step is to start from the center of your bottom lip, then draw the lines to the corners of your mouth on each side.

If you want a relatively fuller look, repeat the process by redrawing the lines from the corner of your lip back to the center where the process began. This will make the color slightly exaggerated and look like a shadow, making the lips look fuller.

6. Fill Both Lips In

At this point, you have achieved the perfect shape and definition to your lips. Apply your favorite lipstick and if there is a need for a slight adjustment, you can use a lip brush or your fingertip to blend the lip liner and lipstick together.

In a case where you have overdrawn the edges or lip lines, you should clean up with a tissue, then dab a little more lipstick on your lips from the center. Rub both lips together, and you’re set for the day!

Bonus Tip: Add some lip gloss over your lipstick for a shiny and long-lasting finish.
