lipstick for dark skin

Finding a sexy lipstick that compliments my darker skin without giving off the clown effect sometimes feels impossible. Tell us if this is you: You spend hours doing extensive research before buying half of the makeup aisle, only for your experience to be the same. Even though many beauty brands market their products as being universal,  the reality is that this isn’t always the case. In fact, when you’re shopping for the perfect lipstick for date night or the office, it’s important to test out which shades match your skin tone first. Here are just a few trendy lipstick shades for dark skin tones.

Orange

If you’re prone to picking up red lipstick every time, you may want to branch out and try an orange lip. It’s close to the red family, plus it won’t take you completely out of your comfort zone. When it comes to finding the perfect orange lip color, make sure that you pick a shade that compliments your warm or cool undertones. Take Kat Von D’s “A Go-Go” for a test drive to see if you like it.

Dark brown

Your search for the perfect nude lipstick shade is over. Instead of trying on countless products that are marketed as nudes but really only compliment lighter skin tones, stick to browns in shades of coffee. Not only will brown lipstick will blend in perfectly with your dark skin, it will accentuate your lips. Try Colourpop’s “Limbo” or L’Oreal’s “Spice“.

Blue

This shade is not for the faint of heart. For the past few years, I was dying to get my hands on blue lipstick but was never really sure if I could pull it off. Will it wash me out? What if it doesn’t look flattering with my darker skin tone? These were just two of many questions that would stop me every time I would almost go through with buying the lipstick. So I finally took a giant leap and do not regret it at all! If you’re looking to stand out, this is it. There are so many blue hues that you can choose from. If you’re afraid that it will be too bright, you can either buy a blue that is closer to the purple family or blend in a dab of brown lipstick to make it look less bold. Try NYX’s soft matte lip cream in “Moscow“.

Burgundy

Burgundy is arguably one of the most flattering lip shades for all skin tones. This has steadily become my go-to shade when I want to look put together without really trying. The dark undertones in the burgundy will make your skin glow and define your lips. Check out L’Oreal’s colour riche lipstick in Raisin Rapture or Colourpop’s “LAX” (if you’re into matte lipstick).

Purple

Purple has pretty much become the new pink and I’m here for it. The best part is that you can totally get away with rocking purple to school or the office; it’s all about pairing it with the right colors and accessories. You can go for a light or dark hue; both are easy to pull off regardless of whether you have warm or cool undertones. Try Anastasia Beverly Hills’ lip gloss in Purple Rain.

Magenta

A mix between the violet and berry family, magenta is a super sexy alternative. It may appear intense at first, so be sure to use a lip pencil to blend it in. Check out Anastasia Beverly Hills’ “Madison“, which is more of a plum-magenta hybrid.
