We put more effort into being messy than we put into making perfect styles without a hair out of place, and it makes a lot of sense. We don’t want to look like we tried too hard, and we want to look cute and effortless. Besides, for those of us that are not so talented in this art, it can be very difficult to do a perfect hairstyle without messing up. So if you do mess up, make it a part of your hairstyle, rather than a mistake that you need to cover up. Here are some our favorite messy hairstyle ideas:

1. Messy bun

There are lots and lots of variations of this simple hairstyle. It can be a low bun or a high bun – it can be more complicated or very simple. The thing is, a messy bun requires virtually no effort. The key is teasing your hair before making one, and no fixing the messes. this is our favorite of the messy hairstyle ideas.

2. Messy braid

We LOVE our braided hairstyles because they combine elegance with intricacy. It doesn’t matter if you make an ordinary braid, a fishtail braid, a French braid or a Dutch braid. There are ways of making a braid more modern and messier.

One of our favorite ways of creating a messy braid look is to actually create two braids. Separate your hair in half right down the middle and start braiding two French braids on each side, not using up all hair. Don’t finish them; let the ends hang loose with the rest of the hair. If you curl your hair a little bit it will create a perfect, messy and voluminous look.

Once you are done with making a braid, pull out some strings to loosen it and tease the ends of your hair. Voila!

3. Messy ponytail

This is one of our go-to messy hairstyle ideas that you can wear in the streets as well as on the red carpets these days. The key to a messy ponytail is teasing and volume. The more volume and texture you add to your hair, the messier your ponytail will be.

4. Half-up half-down

This messy hairstyle idea is by far the freshest and it can include many different variations. Whether you gather the part of your hair in a knot, braid it, or simply tie it, this hairstyle will suit most faces and will be incredibly easy to make. Tease your hair; separate the top part from the bottom part and tie the top part in a bun, make it into a mini-ponytail or make a very loose loop with it to create a very effortless look.

5. Space buns

We have discovered that when done with long hair it is much more difficult to manage than when done with shoulder length hair; but the idea stays the same. Space buns are easy to make and they are all the rage right now. You can make two big space buns or two small space buns using only the half of your hair. You can create one bun on the very top of your head or any other variations you see fit. It will look magical and totally alien.

There are hundreds of messy hairstyle ideas you can create from dozens of styles. What is your favorite?
