Are your eyebrows thin or light?  Do they look a bit lackluster? You may be wondering how celebs always keep their brows looking perfect. Filling them in every day can get tiresome and what about when you spend a day at the pool or the beach? You don’t want to be preoccupied with worries about your eyebrows washing off.

It’s time you learned about microblading if you haven’t already.  Microblading your eyebrows has skyrocketed in the last year or so and it is one of the hottest beauty treatments out there right now. Does it really work and can it work for you?

This short guide will cover everything you need to know.

What is microblading?

Microblading is a cosmetic procedure that uses a hand-controlled specialized tool to make cuts in the skin where pigment is implanted. It is considered semi-permanent. The pigment ends up looking like eyebrow hairs.  It is being used to make eyebrows look fuller and to fill in areas where eyebrow hairs are sparse.

How does it work?

A technician will use a microblading pen to meticulously create a customized brow for you.  The pen has a collection of microneedles which are dipped into a pigment color. Then the pen makes fine cuts and the pigment is implanted in the skin.

What you should know about choosing a technician

You will want to find one who knows what they are doing and has been doing it for a while.  Never allow someone to do this treatment in their home or in a facility that is not professional looking.   Ask for references and photos of past work.

How to prepare for your appointment

The technician should ask that you keep your skin protected from anything that might make it sensitive prior to treatment.  For example, do not treat your face with retin-A and other products that may irritate the skin. Also, don’t do any plucking, exfoliating, or tanning the day before.

What to do at your appointment

Tell your tech what you want.  Do not be afraid to explain exactly what you are looking for.  Bring photos from magazines if you would like.  This is a semi-permanent treatment and you don’t want to get stuck for weeks with brows that you aren’t happy with.

How to care for your brows post appointment

After your appointment is complete, most technicians will recommend that for the rest of the day you lightly wipe the eyebrow area with distilled water and apply the aftercare cream at one-hour intervals. For the following week, aftercare cream application is usually recommended twice per day.

For the first two weeks after a microblading procedure, you should avoid touching the area except for to apply the aftercare cream. Whatever you do, you don’t want to scratch, pick, or peel anything from the eyebrow area. Also, minimize sun exposure, exercise, long hot showers or baths, saunas, products containing retinol, and alcohol consumption.

So, there you have it.  If you are looking into microblading or just curious about what it is and how it works, hopefully you have gained a better understanding.    It’s a beauty treatment that is suitable for women looking for a thicker, darker, fuller brow every day without the hassle of pencils, gels, powders, pens, and wands.
