Hangovers, we’ve all been there—more often than we like to admit. The pounding headache, heavy stomach, nausea, and fatigue can all be prevented with some careful planning ahead. When you wake up after a long night out it’s common to feel guilt about not having prevented your hangover. Did you know you can actually prevent your hangover the day before going out? Of course having a glass of water in between drinks and pacing yourself can play a huge role in minimizing the damage the next day, but following these tips on how to prevent a hangover the day before will ensure that you feel energized and radiant the day after you drink a little too much.
Follow these six tricks on how to prevent a hangover the day before.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Being dehydrated is the easiest way to wind yourself up into a horrific hangover. Drink plenty of water all day, getting as much in as early in the day as possible. The sooner you’ll be hydrated, the less you have to worry once you start drinking. It’s still a good rule of thumb to drink water alongside and in between cocktails, but get a headstart on hydration. Even better, load up on electrolytes. Coconut water is a great way to lock in plenty of hydration. Our favorite trick? Drink vodka mixed with coconut water to refuel while you sip and enjoy a tropical drink.
Charcoal pills to the rescue
Activated charcoal is in your favorite face masks, whitening toothpaste, and a handful of other beauty products. So it comes as no surprise that activated charcoal has been used for holistic health purposes for more than 10,000 years in Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Western medicine. Charcoal absorbs and eliminates toxins in the body and can help counteract ingested poisons and enhance digestive health. Activated charcoal can capture, bind, and remove up to 100 times the charcoal’s weight in toxins, including those we ingest after drinking alcohol. Pop some charcoal before drinking and you’ll feel ready to drink again the next day—yass.
Load up on Vitamin B
Drinking alcohol depletes your body’s store of Vitamin B. Ironically, your body needs vitamin B to help eliminate the alcohol from your body. Take a Vitamin B supplement (preferably B6) to help prevent a hangover the day before, and take it again the morning after to really do the trick.
Get your antioxidants
Skip brunch the day before going out and get an acai bowl instead! Loading up on antioxidants can help mitigate hangover damage. Antioxidants help prevent and reduce inflammation and oxidative stress—both caused by alcohol. Prevent a hangover the day before by consuming acai, pomegranate juice, or take a multivitamin with antioxidants.
Hook up to an IV
You’ve likely heard of hydration stations before. People frequent them after waking up with a hangover, and they’re often dubbed the “hangover cure.” However, you can prevent the hangover altogether if you head to an IV hydration station the day before you drink. Hydration IVs provide you with electrolytes, vitamins, and antioxidants. Get everything you need with 20-30 minutes hooked up to an IV.
Don’t skimp on your meal
Whether you’re with your friends for dinner or not, now is not the time to show off your healthy habits. Skip the skimpy salad and order a burger with avocado and fries. Seriously, if you want to prevent a hangover, you need a meal with plenty of carbs, fat, and protein. Hangovers can be prevented with food because your body is better able to metabolize alcohol if you have plenty of macros on your plate.
