This morning, you woke up to a pimple that wasn’t there the night before. You’ve been a lot better about washing your makeup off before going to bed, so this surprise visit from your bumpy friend is a low blow. You’ve tried everything to get rid of it. Toothpaste? Been there, done that. That red sucker is super stubborn and has no plans of leaving.
But here’s a secret. The best way to fight acne is in your fridge. In case of a major breakout, baking soda is one of the oldest tricks in the book. All you need to do is put it on your face and let it work its magic. It doesn’t hurt that it also has many other benefits. Here’s how to fight acne using baking soda.
1. Get rid of old scars.
Those of us who break out often know how frustrating it is for your acne to finally disappear, only to leave behind evidence that it was there on your face. Use baking soda to reduce the scars. The best part is that all you need is water to create this miracle paste. Be sure to apply it twice daily to see results. This will also even out your skin tone.
2. Control the amount of oil your skin produces.
Baking soda is the ultimate oil patrol. It absorbs the extra oil that your skin produces, which in turn dries out your pimples. If you have oily skin, create the same paste from earlier and apply it to problem areas.. However, it’s crucial that you add a moisturizer after you apply the paste. This will help regulate the oil being produced without drying out your skin.
3. Exfoliate your skin without damaging it.
The first time I used baking soda as a exfoliator, I couldn’t stop touching my face. It leaves your skin feeling smooth without being too harsh. You can either mix in a teaspoon of baking soda with your favorite cleanser or use it alone. If you’re hesitant about the texture, you can mix baking soda and honey separately for a smoother feel.
4. Soothe any redness and swelling.
Baking soda is packed with anti-inflammatory properties that combat redness and swelling. It provides relief to any irritated areas on your skin. Create a soothing face mask using baking soda and aloe vera. The aloe vera works together with the baking soda to reduce swelling and repair your skin. To create the mask, mix one teaspoon of aloe vera gel (fresh or store bought) and baking soda. After applying, let it sit until it dries.
5. Stop acne BEFORE it begins.
For clear skin, take another visit to your fridge and pull out the last lemon. Lemons are known for their skin healing properties, and their ability to stop the bacteria that causes your breakout right in its track. Caution: Lemon and baking soda combined may be too harsh if you have sensitive skin. To see if this mix works for you, apply a small dose of it to your hand first.
