Looking beautiful and feeling great both start in the same place—from how well you take care of yourself. Better beauty sleep starts with the wellness practices you make a part of your everyday life. Here are some of the best things you can do to wake up looking beautiful every morning.

Get some exercise—but not too close to bedtime

If it seems like exercise is always the answer, that’s because it has almost magical abilities to improve your health. Working up a sweat on a regular basis makes you look more beautiful because it carries more oxygen to your blood cells, which gives you a gorgeous, healthy glow. Exercise will also help you to sleep more deeply, too. However, make sure you don’t exercise too close to bedtime, since exercise boosts your energy levels for a few hours and that can make it hard to sleep.

Lay off the alcohol

There’s nothing like a glass of wine for helping you unwind after a long, stressful day at work. But if you indulge in alcohol too often, it will start affecting your looks as well as your sleep. The more you drink, the stronger the negative effects. Another bonus of cutting back on alcohol: in addition to sleeping better, ditching the empty calories will also likely help you lose a couple pounds.

Sweep away the stress

It’s no joke: stress can kill you. Making an effort to reduce your stress before you go to bed will help to fight insomnia so you can sleep better. Stress also has a number of major negative effects on your health, too, like causing heartburn and headaches, as well as increasing your risk of heart disease. Try stress-busting activities like writing in a journal, doing a gentle yoga routine or snuggling with a pet.

Clean up your diet

The advice to follow a healthy diet often goes hand in hand with the encouragement to get regular exercise, and for good reason—the combination is like a one-two punch in its effectiveness in solving so many issues. What you put into your body has a huge effect on how well you sleep, too. Avoid foods that might make it harder to sleep, like spicy foods and deep-fried foods. Balanced meals with some protein and carbs will be the best for helping you sleep well. Make sure to include lots of items from the farmer’s market, too—the more fruits and vegetables you eat, the better your skin will look.

Create the right environment for sleep

Your bedroom should be like your oasis away from the rest of the world. Make sure to use your bedroom only for sex and for sleeping—and avoid bringing your smartphone to bed, since the blue light can make it harder to sleep. It’s also important to make sure it’s a comfortable room, especially when it comes to temperature. Sleeping in a cooler room improves the quality of your rest.

Developing a few good habits can make a big difference in how rested you feel. When you get enough sleep, it will help you to look your best, too!
